DQS quilt

Ok, so in my little rant yesterday, I didn't fully explain what the doll quilt swap IS ! LOL
All the participants are divided up into groups of 12 or 14 or so, and put under a swap mama or papa. Each "parent" manages the needs of their "babies". :) We were all matched up with someone to give TO, and then someone that will be making a quilt for us. So... i got my swap partner's name, and info... and now it's my job to start stalking her. LOL And it's secret. (ssshhhh) I have to figure out her likes and dislikes, which direction her tastes run, her favorite colors, etc... and then design and make a little doll quilt for her!!

Ooohh mannn. I gotta tell ya... i was struggling!!! My secret partner doesnt have much in her favorites... and what she does have contradicts what she says she likes and doesn't like! So i was confused!! :(
Well I have been chewing (quite heavily) on it for a couple days now, and finally came to a couple conclusions!! Woohooo!! So i decided to put some ideas in motion today! I am going with her words, more than her pictures, (although they played a small part in my direction too). I suuurreee hope i am on the right path!! I don't want to dissapoint her!! I really want her to like it!
So, I'm stepping wayyyyyy out of my box! And I am sooo unsure!! I keep questioning "is this tooo wild?" "what if she doesn't like that color?" "what if, what if, what if...???"
LOL
But i KNOW she likes these colors. AND i KNOW she likes brights! So I can't be TOO far off..... riiiiggghhhttt??
Here's a sneak peek. Maybe she's reading my blog right now!?

I got the top done today. Well... MOSTLY done. LOL I have a few other plans for it before quilting. And i gotta say... i am soooooooo nervous i'm going to screw it up and have to start all over!
**beads of persperation forming on forehead**
I have the month of august to get it done and shipped . Oh man.. talk about a case of nerves! LOL

***** NOTE to MY designer ****
Please please please do NOT stress yourself out like this!!! LOLOL I will LOVE anything you make!!!!! The fact that YOU made it is what will excite me the most!! Honest injun! :D And i am soooooo wide open right now, it's not even funny! LOL So HAVE FUN, and put your personality into it! :D

Doll Quilt Swap 7

These are mosaics for my favorites that I have accumulated of OTHER people's wonderful creations! They inspire me, they make me smile, they... make me happy. :D

Do you notice anything? A pattern perhaps?

I did!

Apparently I am very drawn to crisp color, squares, and circles, and WHITE. LOL And a sense of naivete in design.

I discovered something about myself this last month or two. Something that surprised me.

That my die hard LOVE of primitives is not challenged because I also love the whimsical. This is something that I have struggled with for YEARS in my rug hooking. My love of folkart, and color, and whimsy, battling with my love of true primitive. Each rug I make, there is an internal battle as to which direction to take that rug! More color, less color? Brighter or duller. And here's the catch - you cannot do both and have it turn out looking old and loved, or folky! They are opposites!! Well usually my love of prim old drab wins out. But in sneak the muted reds and muted golds, hints of purple, and drab greens. LOL And brown. We can't forget brown! lol allll values and hues of browns. (hush Dan!!)

Now... enter quilting. LOL

I have always loved primitive old world type quilts. Always.

So, in the last two or three years... why is that when i would see a bright, vibrant, crisp quilt with multitudes of colors that aren't normally even an option... why does my heart do a little pitter patter ? And why do i immediately go OOHH!! Lookky that!! :D LOL

(by the way, i definitely do that with prims too lol)

But they didnt have "a place" in my home.

Having 2 little girls has changed me. I am more open to the fun of pink! Whouda thunk? But get this.... NOT IN ANYTHING BUT MODERN QUILTS!! (and little girl's clothes lol)

So when the old barn quilt along started, i was nervous believe it or not. This was a part of me that I had kept smashed down within me for a very long time, and not allowed out! lol So buying those pink and green fun fabrics, I nearly hyperventilating in fear!! LOL!

But by the time I was walking out to the car, i was getting excited!! Pulling them out, and cutting them, sewing them, i was absolutely GIDDY. :<0>
And this last weekend, I made some primitive log cabin blocks, with all my beloved homespuns and prim fabrics and was just as delighted. So... you see... what i am saying... is that there is no right or wrong in the art world. An artist CAN swing on both ends of the pendulum! (i dont think that's spelled correctly!) Something i have known in my head for a long time, but not truly experienced personally, until now! And it just opens up such a world of possibilities, that I had closed off to myself before!

I am VERY excited to be participating in the new doll quilt swap. I dont know that my limited knowledge of quilting will help me... lol... but my experience in sooo many other types of sewing, will. As I really dont separate thoughts, techniques and inspiration into art compartments. They're all free game! So I think this will be so much fun! It will make me stretch, and grow, it will make me try things I wouldnt normally, and last but not least... the action of creating, which has been rather dry lately, brings such immense joy!!

Now when i look at quilts, I'm MORE happy with the crisp happy designer fabrics of amy butler, A. Henry, M. Miller, S. Henderson, J. Dewberry, and H. Bailey! Add in white, and it's gonna be a winner no matter what you do with it! LOL! Add in circles or wonky squares and and i'm doing a silly little happy dance like one of my girls! LOL Silly? Yah probably. True transparent view? Yes, definitely. Am I smiling more in the last month than I have in a long time?? Most Definitely!! Do I still love prim? Oh yah, fer sure! But when it comes to quilts... my heart has been stolen by the modern! Where am I going to put them?? Dunno. Dont have a clue. LOL They'll find their place, or carve out their place. And somehow... I believe it will be a harmonious union! God didn't make me one or two dimensional. He made me more like a prism with many many different ways to reflect light! :D

I'm here :)
But my internet connection has not been lately. I have no idea what's going on with it, but i can get on for about 2 minutes, and then poof, no more connection! It's driving me insane!!!

This week is going to be a busy one. Back to school supply shopping, and getting the kids back on schedule (wish me luck!! lol) ... and i am participating in 2 quilt alongs. Will talk more on that next post, as i dont know how long this connection will last!! But I've been sewing. This is for a friend... now to quilt it. Thinking real prim hand stitches, thanks to Kelley!!
K, i best hit post while i still can!
blessings, bren :)

Sewy weekend

Been piddlefartin around with sewy stuff. Got my new top done yesterday, and basted... now just to quilt it! Yay!
Check out this nifty little gadget!! Jacque gave it to me for my birthday!!! It's a bobbin winder! How COOL is that?! So you don't have to undo all your thread from your machine to wind a bobbin!!! Isn't it nifty?! I love love love it!! Thank you Jacq!!! :D

Sewing mess... after the moms left the other day. We are having fun putting their quilts together!! My mom is doing an americana stars and stripes lap quilt. And my MIL is doing a "baby" quilt (although more geared toward little boy, than baby -smart move in my opinion) really cute fabrics - and they are looking sooo good!! Will take pics this Thursday when they come over! :)
Oh! And my MIL gave me a pack of new blades for my rotary cutter!!! WoooHOOO!!!!!! Those suckers are expensive and I never seem able to justify getting a new pack! LOL Mine still cuts... so I'm still good... right?? LOL Well... after using mine the other day, and it wasn't cutting so well.... without tons of pressure... lol... she comes the next day with these! :D Thanks Mom!!!! I can't believe the difference!! I should have caved and got some a lonnnnggg time ago!! hahaha!!

border strips... just waiting for the sashing...

Worked on mine after they left. Got the middle done!

And got it all put together!! AND got it basted last night! Yay! :)

Ran into a little issue though. And cant figure out what i did wrong?? See those ripples in the frabric, on this edge of the pic?? Everything has been pressed... and even during pressing those ripples were showing up :( I didn't have to ease the fabric in anywhere... so how does that happen?? I'm sure it's going to give me fits when quilting it!! A bit scared to start now! LOL This is a gift for a friend... and i don't want it to be all puckered and chunky in my sewing :( Anyone out there have any thoughts on this?
Funny, this is only 60x60... i didnt have that problem on the bigger ones! (thank God!! lol) But I dont want it to happen again... so gotta figure out what i did wrong!
Thanks for your suggestions on the chick flicks!! I haven't seen several of them! I haven't watched Marley & Me ... yet. Knowing it is going to be a major tear jerker, and having a bit of a headache already, just didn't want to go there the other night! LOL But Bailey said he'd watch it with me this week :)
Been hot hot hot here this last week. Dan and I have been riding the scooters alot. Doing a little geocaching and just enjoying our time with our kids!! Love summer!!! :)
Going to help my girlfriend paint her dining room today.
Hope you have a blessed day, filled with smiles!

Movies

Movies.
I love good movies!! But haven't seen any in a long time. Mostly because it just doesn't seem like there are many "good" ones out there the last year or two! So much horror and evil junk. :(
Well last night we watched 2... and now i am on a kick! lol
I am soooo in a chick flick mood!! Last night we watched Bride Wars... funny!
Tonight i am going to watch Marley and me... but i need more good recent chick flicks!! Any suggestions??

We also watched this last night. Interesting :) And no... i'm not usually only a chick flick kinda girl! I love action adventure!!! (much to hubby's delight lol)

And i am COUNTING DOWN THE DAYS until the new Harry Potter movie hits the screen!!! We WILL be going to the theater for this one!! We are major die hard HP fans. LOL
Only 4 more days!!!!!!!!!! WOOOHOOOOO!!!!! :D

Oohh i really wanna go see Transformers 2 at the theaters too. My son Bailey saw it already.. said it was good, but not as good as the first in his opinion. That's ok.. i still wanna see it :)

And oohhh... have you seen the previews for THIS?!?!? The little preview we saw for it looked good good!!
Ok... and this one... is out now... but was rented out when we went to get it. Now... i just saw another preview for this last night... a longer one... and now i'm not so sure i want to see it? It looks more creepy and "end of the world/evil" than it first seemed on the other snippet. Anyone seen it? Care to comment? I'm such a wuss... i don't do creepy evil stuff.
And last but not least... yah... ima goob. I gotta see this!!! First one was great! Loved the story line!! Loved Owen Williams' character. :)
But seriously.... LADIES.... shoot me some good suggestions for some good feel good chick flicks!? I am in the mood to sit and do a girl movie marathon, while hooking!! And I'm empty handed!! How can that be??? So any good ones pop into mind that might have come out in the last year or two?
Seems like i have missed them all?! LOL
hugs,
Bren

No pics today :(
I guess ya'll weren't too enthused on the pluto thing, huh? lol
That's ok. I won't do it anymore :D
Been lots going on. But haven't felt like it's "blog worthy". Taking the kids to the pool, the library, youth group, etc. We just found out we'll be getting a new roof next week. Yay! We've had some serious big hail storms here this summer, and i guess they trashed the roof. So i guess i need to make plans to NOT be here when they're scraping and hammering - talk about edgy nerves! That scraping sound is like fingers on a chalkboard!

I'm kind of excited... my mom and my mother in law have both taken an interest in learning to quilt!! Told them i would show them what i learned in the quilt along... since that's all i know so far! LOL They were both very excited... we went out and chose fabrics for each and they came over the next day, and got their fabric ironed and stripped, and some of them sewn together. That was their "homework" - getting them all sewn. I thought it would be a good pace for them to come over once a week... but they were both more interested in keeping going!! So they are coming over again this morning and we are going to work on them. They'll have their tops completed by today!! They're both making smaller quilts, MIL is doing a crib size, and my mom is doing a lap throw. I am working on a quilt i am giving at Christmas time - so I'm getting something done too!! Woohooo!! Very cool!!
I'll take pictures today of their progress and post them. I'm excited for them!!

I also signed up to do a zigzag quilt along. Fun fun!! But for some reason ... lol... i didn't realize this before... but apparently i am "anti-zigzag" !! Maybe something to do with the fact that it reminds me of the 70's motifs... something i really dont care for! LOLOL!! So... i am going to flip a few of the zigs and turn them into squares. Now squares... i LOVE!! <3 I think i am going to do a very simple one fabric.. and white... love that look.
I might even pull out my hooking this weekend. I've tackled most of the laundry, and cleaned floors, and vacuumed, and got 2 bathrooms done, and all the clothes hung and put away, and feel like i'm making progress. Yay! Still alot more to be done.. always is... but not so stressed about it anymore. :)

Well that's it for today. Boring. I know. lol such is my life!
Hopefully have some pics and FUN stuff for ya next time!
Blessings,
Bren :)

Trivia on Pluto

Ok... this is going to be LONG. LOL

I read this the other day and found it totally interesting. Maybe because i'm from the generation where it was never questioned whether Pluto was a planet or not... and now... my kids say nope it's not! Some neat scientific facts (or lack of) and basically just a knowledge builder. Quirky. Yes. My norm? Privately yes, on the blog no. LOL I like learning new things. :)

So anyhow... thought it was something some of you might enjoy also. Grab a cup o joe... or popcorn... it's about a ten minute read. :P And please excuse any typos - this is going to take a while to type out!!

"THAT WHOLE UNPLEASANT PLUTO THING" - From Uncle John's Plunges into the Universe 2002 (notice the date)

Is Pluto a planet or not? It depends on whom you ask.

In school, kids are taught that our solar system has nine planets, which are, in order of their orbital distance from the sun: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto.
But at the Rose Center for Earth and Space, the high-tech museum/planetarium at New York's American Museum of Natural History, you'll be told that the solar system has only eight planets: Pluto's gone from the lineup.

WHAT???
A victim of the Death Star? Hardly. Pluto, already cold and lonely out there in the dark reaches of the solar system, has been unceremoniously demoted from the lineup by the Rose Center. Why did they do that? Because, "Pluto should assumerose center's director. One problem with the demotion: The International Astronomical Union, who one would suspect knows about this stuff, steadfastly maintains that Pluto is still a planet. The Rose Center is baldly bucking the scientific community.

THOSE NERVY NEW YORKERS
So what's going on? Is Pluto a planet or not? How do you demote a planet in the first place? Is this just a case of New Yorkers being pushy? And what the heck is a Kuiper Belt and why does it have comets? Patience. All will be explained as we delve into the mysteries of Pluto, the planet that isn't a planet, except that maybe it is.

THAT FREAKY LITTLE PLANET
No matter what you call it, Pluto has always been the oddball of the solar system family. All the other planets fall comfortably into two groups: small, rocky, "terrestrial" planets - Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars - or large, gaseous affairs like Jupieter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. But Pluto fits neither description. It's pretty dinky relative to the other planets (less than 1,500 miles in diameter, which makes it smaller than several moons in the solar system, including our own, which scores 2,200 miles, ) but it's not especially rocky or gassy. It's more like a snowball, comprised of ice, some rock and nitrogen - its composition, in fact is rather like that of a comet.

MORE FREAKY STUFF
There are other weird things about Pluto as well. First, while the rest of the planets orbit the Sun within a few degrees of the ecliptic (an imaginary plane on which Earth's orbit rests), Pluto's orbit is wildly off kilter, dipping above and below the rest of the solar system by more than 17 degrees. Pluto's orbit is dramatically elliptical as well: the point in Pluto's orbit closest to the Sun is nearly 1.8 billion miles closer than its most distant point. Pluto's orbit is so out of whatck, in fact, that for a brief period of time in every orbit, it's closer to the Sun than Neptune, traditionally the second farthest planet out. (No point hoping for a collision, however: thanks to Pluto's orbital tilt, its always far above Neptune when this happens.) Pluto's far-back position in the solar system is also a puzzle, since all the other small planets nestle close to the Sun, while the gas planets patrol the outer lanes of the solar system.

HOORAY FOR THE USA: OR, HOW PLUTO MET MICKEY
Even Pluto's discovery in 1930 was something of an accident. Astronomers were looking for a planet they thought was disturbing the orbits of Uranus and Neptune, which they figured would have to be roughly six times the mass of Earth. Clyde Tombaugh, working at the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, found Pluto instead. As it happens, the Earth is 500 times more massive than Pluto (and the "perturbations" of the other planetary orbits were probably just errors in measurement,) but hey, who cares?

The important thing was that the good ol' U.S. had discovered a planet!! People went Pluto-crazy: even Walt Disney got into the act, naming Mickey Mouse's dog after the new discovery. For the next 60 years or so, Pluto was a planet, no question.

THE OBJECTS OF OUR REFLECTION
It took another discovery in 1992 to plant the seeds of doubt about Pluto's planetary status. That year, astronomers Dave Jewitt and Jane Luu discovered another object, similar to pluto's composition but much smaller, orbiting the Sun between Neptune and Pluto. The object, named QB1, was just the first of these sorts of objects to be found - since then, dozens have been discovered, some of them hundreds of miles in diameter, up to a third of the size of Pluto itself. They've been dubbed "Kuiper Belt Objects," after Gerald Kuiper, who decades earlier predicted the existence of such objects, a "belt" where they were located, and the idea that this belt is where many comets came from.

IF IT LOOKS LIKE A PLUTO...
You see the problem. If all these new Kuiper Belt Objects look like Pluto, only smaller, wouldn't it also be fair to say that pluto looks just like these kuiper belt objects, only bigger? Couldn't Pluto simply be, as the Rose Centers director says, " The King of Kuiper Belt Objects?" The answer many astronomers give is: Of course its a kuiper belt object, but that doesn't mean it can't be a planet as well. Because here's the dirty secret about planets: There's not a good hard and fast definition of what a planet is.

YOU CALL THAT A PLANET?
Given that there's no absolute definition, here's how Pluto stacks up against its neighbors, including us:
*One defininition of a "planet" is an object that orbits the Sun and whose gravity is large enough that the object has compacted into spherical form ( a sphere being the most compact shape possible, from gravity's point of view - not counting a black hole, that is). Well, Pluto does orbit the Sun: and it is a sphere, so it passes by that definition. However, by that definition, so does Ceres, the largest of the asteroids, which is not given the courtesy of being known as a planet by contemporary astronomers. Some of the larger of the newly discovered Kuiper Belt Objects might also pass this planetary muster on closer inspection, but it seems unlikely they'll be elevated to planetary status, either.

* Another definition of "planet" might include the idea that a planet has to be massive enough to "sweep its lane" - that is, knock any big objects out of its orbital path. Here Pluto fails, as evidenced by the preponderance of Kuiper Belt Objects loitering between it and Neptune. On the other hand, there's a good chance that if Mercury was placed in Pluto's orbit, it wouldn't sweep the lane either. (There are no big objects in Mercury's orbit, but it's also parked next to the Sun, which helps clear things out.)

* Maybe a planet needs an atmosphere? Pluto's got one, at least part of the time - a thin nitrogen atmosphere that freezes out as Pluto moves toward the outer reaches of its orbit. But Mercury doesn't. How about moons? Pluto has Charon, which is half its diameter, making it the biggest moon in the system relative to the size of its planet. Once again Mercury fails, with no moon. Venus also has no moon, but it's indisputably a planet. It's Earth-sized, and has an atmosphere, as well.

* The planet controversy works in the other direction, as well. Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system by far, but some stars have orbiting balls of hydrogen and helium gas that are several times larger than Jupiter and even generate heat, but are too small to be called stars in their own right. These objects are called "brown dwarfs" rather than planets.

THE LAST WORD, AT LEAST FOR NOW
Ultimately, the definition of a planet is whatever scientists say it is, and for now, that means that Pluto retains its planetary status. In February 1999, the International Astronomical Union put out a press release that stated, "No proposal to change the status of Pluto as the ninth planet in the solar system has been made by any Division, Commission, or Working Group of the IAU responsible for solar system science."

Take that, Rose Center!

*************
Ok... so i typed all this out on my little laptop. I KNOW there are typos... praying i didnt totally erase whole paragraphs! LOL!

Now... I wish i had an updated article (by the same people) for 2008 or 09 !
As since they stated all the ways/whys/wherefores to planetary status - it makes no sense why Pluto is now NOT a planet?! LOL Except... that last statement ... someone from one of the divisions, commissions or working groups of the iau must have made a proposal... eh??

Uncle John's books are fascinating...enlightening... easy and fun to read... and fill you full of things that make you go "Hmmmmm!" :D Most things in the books are not this long. Most are one page or less, and some little teeny trivia things are all along the bottoms of the pages.

On these pages they are:

Lightning strikes earth somewhere over 17 million times a day or about 200 times a second.

Lightning travels 90,000 miles a second - almost half the speed of light.

Babies cry without tears for up to six weeks after birth.

Most snowflakes are 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch in width and height.

WHO KNEW?!?!?!? LOL (Uncle John's crew does!)

So there ya have it. Useless little trivia that maybe you'll remember, maybe you won't. But I BET all that knowledge about Pluto won't leave your brain any time soon!!
LOL!

And then there's MY take on it all. I'm sure those of you that actually read my blog (not many lol) know where i stand on this one!
Our God is an AWESOME God... and He created this universe with all the amazing intricacies that it has, and everything works together like clockwork gears. Something that man is STILL TRYING to undertand and figure out! Same with the human body. Same with the eco system. It's absolutely AMAZING. And to think that some people think all of this happened because somehow things in the universe slammed together and created some ooze, that became all these wonderful amazing things!?? REALLY????? That is a much bigger make believe made up story than many people say that my God is! LOL Just cracks me up!!!!!!!

OK, with that.. and alllll those words... i'm signin off!!
Hope you have a wonderful awe inspired week!!

Bright blessings,
Bren :)

ps .... one more thing to add! jeez... i know... can i fit any more words in here? LOL
In case you have never been introduced to Uncle John - i urge you to go check them out!! Your HUSBAND/BOYFRIEND/FATHER/SON will be ABSOLUTELY THRILLED to get any of Uncle John's books. Guar-an-teed! They are bathroom readers - big thick books chock full of info that tickle them pink... they go into the bathroom to leave something... and they come out with something new! LOL Great birthday/Christmas/fathers day/ any day gift!
(And yes... most of you women will get sucked in too! LOL )
Look for them at your local bookstore :)

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY!!

Images of Fourth of July....

What an incredible display, that we look forward to each year!! I've always been in awe of fireworks. I swear i immediately become 6 again, every fourth!! :)

FREEDOM
It's all about our freedom!! Freedom to BBQ, or churches to gather, or your right to speak your mind. We are so very lucky to live in a land where we have these rights!! As soo many dont!
Our men have died defending us, defending our right to stay free. Sooo many ... willing to stand up and fight when others have threatened that right. For you, and for me.
So that we aren't threatened each day that we leave our homes.. so that I can blog and say what I want... so that I can bring a bible out in public, and not have to hide it in a hole in the wall.... so that you have the right to vote... and the right to a fair trial, if anything ever happens...
soooooo many reasons....
All I can say is that i PRAY that is how our country STAYS.
I hope our current leadership doesn't take us down the path of socialism, and try to "fix" what aint broken!!
I rejoice in America.
I am THANKFUL each and every day to live in America.
And today, along with all the wonderful displays of that celebration that we most think of on this day, I will be remembering that our Freedom isn't free!!
Like our salvation wasnt free.... Jesus died for us. Paid the highest price for us.
So have our soldiers.
Men faught for our country - to be able to live by God's word, and not the King's rule. They birthed our country ON GOD. IN GOD. FOR GOD.
Funny how now they want to keep America and their freedoms... but take the FOUNDATION of it away. :(
Just blows my mind, to tell you the truth.
And the fact that our government bows down to the wishes of the minorities that whine that they dont believe in God, so it shouldnt be in their face, on their money, or in their government. Yah.. .don't even get me started.
Rejoice today. Give thanks today.
And take time to remember it wasn't by "luck" that you are free!!!
Happy Independence Day!!!
May God be with you!!!
xo
